Ryhill

We are now back at Ryhill, living about two hundred yards from where Carol was born.

Ryhill is (was) a mining village but due to pit closures is now a commuter village for   people working in Barnsley, Leeds, and Wakefield, due to its proximity to the motorway network.

Since the pit closures  the village is much cleaner now.

Ryhill is a friendly place, everyone speaks to you, even if they have never seen you before in their lives.

Although the village is small we have our own Health Centre, Dentist, three hairdressing salons, an old fashioned barbers shop, an Anglican church and a Methodist church.

Unfortunately the churches are not well attended but still continue to contribute to village life through their meeting halls and, of course, a parish magazine which keeps everyone aware of what is going on.

Ryhill is virtually joined to the next village, Havercroft, and whilst both have their own Parish Councils everything in the two villages is shared - like the new Sports Centre and the Cricket Club.

We do well for pubs and we use The Sportsman. The beer is good and Dagmar, the lady of the house and a qualified chef, provides the most delicious and plentiful meals at very good prices - not to be missed  if you are in the area.

Nearby is The Hammer and Anvil where Richard and I go most Monday nights for a drink and to put the world to right!

The countryside around our village is great. A short distance away are three lakes known as the reservoirs, one is used by The West Riding Sailing Club, and all three are used for fishing. The newest of the lakes was constructed from an old outcrop site and is known as the Anglers Country Park. It houses on its banks a Discovery Centre dedicated to the life of Charles Waterton, of Walton fame.

A lovely place to live.

In 1822 Ryhill's population was recorded as 147, but surprisingly Wintersett had 135 and Havercroft and Cold Hiendley combined had 189.
