Crete

We first visited Crete to celebrate our Silver Wedding Anniversary in 1989 and have subsequently returned on two further occasions.

Hersonnisos was our resort and we stayed at a small hotel where the owner had a reputation for liking the ladies a little too much. Some of the younger female guests had named him Adam Hands for obvious reasons and the hotel's Guest Remarks Book was a revelation even though many pages had been torn out! Adam must have had a friend who spoke English so one wonders what was on the missing pages.

Hersonnisos is a throbbing resort .During the day it is a beach resort but at night all the restaurants on the front light up and everyone  has a good meal and a good time.

It is within easy reach of Malia which is the preferred resort for younger people but Aghios Nicolas and the capital, Heraklion are not far away - make sure you go to Heraklion on Market day.

Chania is a good distance away but worth the journey, as is the British War Cemetery at Suda Bay - a very  moving experience.

The trips are good and plentiful. A trip to the mountains is a must, either by car to stop off at the small villages you choose or by coach to stop off at the small villages the tour company chooses!

It was pleasant each evening to walk up the hill (or go by taxi) to the three nearby villages - Old Hersonnisos, Pisco Piano, and Koutouloufari. The villages were beginning to awake to tourism and by now they are probably full of apartment blocks and bars. Then there were just a few restaurants and real Greek bars. Who knows? It may still be the same - I hope so.

A daytime visit to the villages is worthwhile if only for the views.

The promenade bustles, whatever you may think!
